What started as a passion project for women to be financially independent is now a booming bakery business that has created about 25 employment opportunities.

Matlhogonolo Ledwaba’s The BreadBox Bakery and Studio began as a way of positively impacting the lives of women by empowering them with baking skills.

Ledwaba is based in Midrand, Gauteng.

Preventing Cholera through hygiene

The Department of Health has urged South Africans to remain vigilant and avoid known or suspected contaminated food, water and surfaces following the Cholera outbreak.

“Never drink water from unsafe sources such as rivers, dams, or streams, unless boiled or disinfected first,” the department said.

Citizens are urged to visit their nearest health facilities if they experience any slight symptoms of diarrhoea which is a sign of cholera.

Shocky Nengovhela at the helm of engineering

Determined to get into the male-dominated steel industry, Shocky Nengovhela from Middleburg in Mpumalanga, left her job and started her own steel engineering company, Tembo Engineering.

“Mechanical engineering is my passion. I have always wanted to get involved in this industry. We are a growing company. It was not easy to get to where we are now,” she said.

Nengovhela holds a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from the Tshwane University of Technology.

South African firefighters tackle wild fires internationally

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment’s Working on Fire (WoF) programme has deployed a second contingent of 200 firefighters and 13 managers – Mzanzi Hotshots 2 - to assist in ongoing fire suppression operations in the Canadian Province of Alberta.

This follows the deployment of 200 firefighters and 15 managers - on 3 June 2023, this group will return on 11 July.

The second group of firefighters left for Edmonton, Canada, on 14 June 2023 from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport and are expected to return on 21 July.

The benefits of choosing artisanship as a career

Zakhele Sono (36) believes that choosing to be an artisan was the best decision of his life. He believes that young people should consider artisanship as a viable career choice.

Sono, from Nkomazi in Mpumalanga, holds a National Certificate in Engineering and Related Design from the Ehlanzeni Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) College in kaMaqhekeza, Mpumalanga.
