Dr Justice Masilela’s journey from a small village in the Nkomazi region of Mpumalanga to becoming a renowned veterinary professional and entrepreneur serves as a testament to his deep-rooted passion for animals.
As the founder and owner of Asante Veterinary Consultants (AVC) in Boksburg, Johannesburg, Dr Masilela has dedicated his career to improving the health and well-being of livestock.
AVC specialises in providing veterinary services for livestock, including cattle, sheep, goats and poultry. Their services include disease prevention, treatment and overall herd management. Additionally, AVC educates owners on best practices to ensure their animals remain healthy.
Dr Masilela’s connection to animals began in a small village in the Nkomazi region of Mpumalanga, where he was raised in a family with a variety of animals.
His early exposure to animals gave him an understanding of the basic needs of livestock. However, it was through his formal education that he began to realise the depth of veterinary care.
“Enrolling at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science in 2013, I gained a wealth of knowledge about animal health, including nutrition, disease prevention and vaccines –concepts that were often absent in the rural communities where I grew up,” said Dr Masilela.
After completing his studies, he participated in a community service programme, working with veterinary practice service farmers in the West Rand, in areas such as Carletonville, Magaliesburg and the Vaal. “I saw how these farmers struggled with animal health issues that could be prevented with proper care,” he said.
In 2020, he took a leap of faith and founded AVC with the mission of supporting emerging farmers who could not afford the high costs of traditional veterinary care.
Dr Masilela’s goal, he explained, was to provide an affordable, accessible veterinary service to farmers and pet owners who need it most.
“I started from humble beginnings, operating from my flat, to a point where my practice quickly expanded into a full clinic in Boksburg. I started the business with no funding,” he shared.
In a recent interview with Vuk’uzenzele newspaper, he said that by 2023, his company had grown to a national level, collaborating with the Health and Welfare Sector Education and Training Authority to provide training and veterinary services to farmers across South Africa.
As the company continues to grow, it currently employs four dedicated professioals: a veterinarian, two animal health technicians and an animal welfare practitioner.
Looking ahead, Dr Masilela remains committed to his mission of raising the standard of veterinary care across the country. “I want to continue helping animals live healthier, happier lives and empower people to take better care of the animals they love,” he concluded.
