Study abroad with DHET scholarships

Information sourced from the DHET

Are you a dedicated South African student seeking to study for a bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degree abroad?  The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) encourages prospective students to apply for the DHET Funda Germany Scholarship Programme to study at Constructor University in Bremen, Germany.  The fully funded scholarship is accessible to undergraduate, Master’s and PhD students, with studies starting in September 2025 for bachelor’s and Master's programmes and June 2025 for PhD programmes.

Constructor University teaches in English and is ranked in the top 30% of universities worldwide. It is one of the world’s most international institutions, with students from approximately 120 different countries. It offers bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral degrees in a wide range of disciplines.  As South Africa prepares to host Group of 20 (G20) Summit, initiatives like these underscore our country’s commitment to global knowledge exchange and skills development.

Germany and South Africa – both members of the G20 – share strong diplomatic, trade and development ties. Collaboration spans various sectors, including renewable energy, manufacturing, and education. The G20 is an international forum of both developing and developed countries dedicated to resolving global economic and financial issues. South Africa assumed the G20 Presidency from 1 December last year through to November 2025. The country’s presidency will culminate in the 20th Heads of State and Government Summit, which will take place in Johannesburg on November 22 and 23. The DHET provides South African students with international scholarship opportunities, ensuring alignment with national development priorities and addressing the country’s scarce skills needs.

Eligibility and application process

To qualify for scholarships, applicants must be South African citizens in good health, without a criminal record, and meet the academic and visa requirements of the host country. A minimum average of 60% in previous studies is generally required, though this varies per scholarship. Each scholarship has a unique application process, typically detailed on the International Scholarships website (www.internationalscholarships.dhet.gov.za). Many require direct online applications, while some involve submitting specific forms and supporting documents. Deadlines vary by programme.

International partnerships and funding

The DHET collaborates with various countries, including Germany, China, Hungary, and the United States, to provide scholarships at all academic levels. Some scholarships include full funding for tuition, travel, living expenses, medical insurance, and academic support.  All DHET-facilitated scholarships aim to support historically disadvantaged students, with some specifically catering to students with disabilities. Applicants should review available support services to ensure their needs are addressed.
