In the heart of Ga-Marishane village in Limpopo, a remarkable transformation is taking place as Keitsile General Trading CC expands its mission of creativity, culture and empowerment. Founded by Keitsile Meriam Ntlatlana in 2008, the business has grown from humble beginnings in the catering sector and taxi industry to a multifaceted hub for local artisans and aspiring entrepreneurs.
At the helm of this expansion is Gopolang Makgotho, who joined her mother Ntlatlana’s business as a co-founder in 2023. “I grew up in a family rooted in business. My parents were deeply involved in the taxi industry.” When her father passed away in 2006, her mother took over the business and has managed it ever since. Her love for cooking and catering led her to register Keitsile General Trading. “We have now built a company that not only produces beautifully handcrafted products but also empowers local artisans and celebrates South African heritage,” Makgotho told Vuk’uzenzele.
The arts business began with a focus on beadwork, wool crafts and engraving, but has since evolved to include handmade items, plant hire services for events, and classic decorations. The directors, who are proudly self-taught, also offer free training to local crafters. “Arts and crafts are more than just products; they’re expressions of culture and sources of economic empowerment,” Makgotho said.
Training local artisans is a core aspect of Keitsile’s mission. “We help local crafters develop both craft and business skills. Many young people in our community face unemployment and lack access to formal work. Through skills development, we hope to create hope, independence and growth in our village,” she added.
The journey has not been without challenges, especially accessing consistent funding and markets from a rural base. Despite these hurdles, Keitsile General Trading has achieved significant milestones, including participation in Anglo American Zimele and the Limpopo Jewellery Incubator. “Completing training in jewellery-making and business skills affirms the value of our work and strengthens our impact,” Makgotho said.
The company hopes to equip youth with skills to start their own businesses.
While they have yet to receive government assistance, Makgotho remains optimistic. “We have submitted several applications and are currently waiting for feedback,” she said.
