Written by More Matshediso

The Durban Calls for submissions for the 19th edition of Talents DurbanFilmMart Institute (DFMI) has opened submissions for the 19th edition of Talents Durban, one of Africa’s leading development platforms for emerging film professionals.

The programme will take place alongside the Durban FilmMart (DFM) in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, from 24 to 27 July 2026.

Applications close on 9 February 2026.

Talents Durban is the official African satellite programme of Berlinale Talents, the talent development platform of the Berlin International Film Festival. It has established itself as the continent’s premier space for emerging filmmakers and film critics to connect, learn and collaborate.

The programme offers an intensive hybrid experience designed to support creative growth and industry access. This includes an eight-week online mentorship programme, followed by a four-day in-person event in Durban, culminating at the 17th Durban FilmMart, where participants are exposed to ongoing opportunities for collaboration and professional development.

DFMI Director Magdalene Reddy said African storytelling is enjoying much global attention, and Talents Durban plays a critical role in shaping the next generation of industry leaders.

“African storytelling is experiencing an unprecedented global surge, and Talents Durban is right at the heart of nurturing the next generation of industry leaders,” Reddy said. “We are actively seeking bold, innovative and distinctive voices across all disciplines.”

She added that whether applicants are filmmakers developing compelling projects or emerging critics ready to influence critical discourse, Talents Durban offers a gateway to global opportunities.

“We encourage all eligible applicants to seize this opportunity and submit their work,” she said.

Berlinale Talents Programme Manager Nikola Joetze and Project Manager Tobias Pausinger said the strength, diversity and determination of emerging African cinematic voices continue to impress.

“The partnership between Berlinale Talents and the Durban FilmMart Institute is vital in strengthening the international film community and supporting these voices,” they said.

“We eagerly look forward to meeting the 19th cohort and discovering the powerful stories and fresh perspectives they will bring.”

Full submission requirements and eligibility criteria are available on the Durban FilmMart Institute website.
