CAS gives second chance at higher education

Written by Sihle Manda

Each year, thousands CAS gives second chance at higher educationof matriculants start the academic season uncertain about where they will study, often because their initial applications were unsuccessful or their final results improved after application deadlines had passed.

To support these learners, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) has announced that the Central Applications Clearing House (CACH) will be replaced by the Central Application Service (CAS) for the 2026 academic year.

“The Department remains committed to ensuring that no young person is left without information, guidance or support in navigating post-school opportunities,” the DHET said.

According to the Department, CAS offers “a more comprehensive, integrated and long-term solution, addressing access, improving visibility of opportunities across the entire post-school education and training system, and eliminating bogus institutions.”

The service will also showcase alternative pathways beyond traditional universities and colleges, acknowledging that current capacity cannot meet the growing demand for post-school education.

Prospective students can engage with CAS via WhatsApp on 081 308 4196.

Since 2013, CACH has served as an essential safety net, assisting thousands of learners—particularly those whose improved results opened doors they had initially missed. At the start of each year, applicants register to make themselves visible to participating institutions. Public universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), and private institutions then access the database through a secure online portal to identify suitable candidates.

Once a match is found, learners receive an SMS or email prompting them to accept or decline the offer, after which the institution finalises registration directly.

Second Chance Matric Programme

Learners needing to improve their results can also participate in the Second Chance Matric Programme, which allows selected subjects to be rewritten to meet National Senior Certificate or Senior Certificate requirements. Registration for 2026 is open until 6 February 2026 for the May/June exams, either online at https://www.education.gov.za/Programmes/SecondChanceProgramme.aspx, at an accredited examination centre, or at a district office.
