With elections approaching, many
South Africans especially first-time voters need to secure their identity documents (ID) to ensure they can register and cast their ballot.
The Department of Home Affairs has introduced an improved online system to make the process of applying for an ID quicker and more convenient.
If you are 16 years or older, you may apply for an ID.
An ID is vital not only for voting but also for practical needs such as applying for a driving licence or opening a bank account.
The Department of Home Affairs has upgraded its online platform, eHomeAffairs which allows ID applicants to:
- Create a profile.
- Complete and save their application.
- Upload supporting documents.
- Make secure online payments.
- Book appointments at Home Affairs branches.
To book an appointment or check which branches offer the service, visit the Home Affairs booking portal https://ehome.dha.gov.za/ehomeaffairsv3
The system is designed to reduce long queues and ensure that eligible voters can obtain their documents well ahead of election day.
Should you receive your ID with incorrect personal information, the Department of Home Affairs will replace it at no cost.
You may also apply for an ID re-issue if:
- You have married and wish to assume your spouse’s surname.
- You want to revert to a previous surname.
- Your ID has been lost, stolen or damaged.
Although South Africa is phasing out the green ID book in favour of the smart ID card, the process is gradual.
Temporary Identity Certificate
If your ID application will not be finalised in time for voting, you can apply for a Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC). To apply, you will need your ID number for verification.
