Letters of Hope goes live on stage

The South African State Theatre (SAST) has collaborated with multi-award-winning director Vusi’Africa to bring Letters of Hope to arts and entertainment lovers.

Letters of Hope musicalThe adaptation of the critically acclaimed film will be brought to the stage through a captivating musical from 11 to 23 July 2023.

The film was directed by Vusi'Africa, who has an impressive track record, among these was  winning the prestigious award for Artistic Bravery at the Durban International Film Festival for Letters of Hope.

“The musical will bring a powerful story of hope, courage and determination to the stage. Letters of Hope, set in 1976 apartheid South Africa, follows the story of 16-year-old Jeremiah who aspires to be a policeman but faces opposition from his father, a local postman,” said the SAST in a statement.  

“Following his father's death, Jeremiah uncovers his father's secret courier service, delivering letters from freedom fighters in exile and prison to their families. The young hero faces a difficult choice: will he continue his father's mission and deliver hope to those in need?”  SAST said.  

The talented cast includes Aphiwe Mkefe, Sibulele Gcilitshana and Jet Novuka, who will bring depth and emotion to the characters and their struggles. 

Vusi'Africa has also received recognition for his work on the highly acclaimed "Surviving Gaza" (2021) which scooped the South African Film and Television Awards Best Emerging Filmmaker accolade, and 14 nominations at the 18th Africa Academy Movie Awards. 

The SAST, which is the largest theatre complex on the continent, has a long history of supporting arts projects and promoting talented performers. 

“By partnering with Vusi Africa, the SAST continues its commitment to showcasing outstanding productions that reflect the diversity and richness of the South African culture and history,” the SAST said.
