When Ntombifikile Ngaleka started planting vegetables in her yard she had no idea that one day she would own a farming business that supplies local shops and school feeding schemes.

During Women’s Month a Cape Town woman will be spreading the food garden message to help alleviate the burden of poverty.

Tenjiwe Kaba from Cape Town is a hero. For the past 30 years, Mama Kaba has been changing the face of townships around Cape Town, turning dusty pieces of land into flourishing vegetable gardens which feed hundreds of people.

Kaba (69) grew up on a farm near Kokstad in the Eastern Cape where her parents worked as farm workers.

Breastfeeding is optimal for child health development and nutrition of infants but most working mothers find it difficult to continue the practice when they return from maternity leave.

This is because there are no suitable spaces at most workplaces for new mothers to express or breastfeed their children during working hours, and they become discouraged to continue breastfeeding because they spend most of the day at work without their babies.

Breastmilk is one of the best ways that a mother can give her baby all the necessary nutrients in the proper proportions which keeps the baby healthy and protects against diseases.

Every mother who chooses to exclusively breastfeed her baby in the first six months is doing the best she can to help her baby grow and stay healthy.

The students will complete their sixth-year studies and integration into the South African health system.
