Health: On the road to recovery

South Africa’s health system is recovering following major initiatives to strengthen the system.

In June last year, the Minister of Health Dr Aaron Motsoaledi noted that the health system needed a major overhaul to prevent a crisis. The Minister outlined his plan of action, which includes four key priorities:

Better transport for future generations

2010 World Cup legacy

Many South Africans and visiting football fans, had to use public transport during the FIFA World Cup. They were pleasantly surprised at how efficiently it worked. The country’s improved public transport system has been identified as one of the key legacy projects of the World Cup. This legacy will be enjoyed by generations of South Africans for many years to come.

More nurses, better health

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has made a commitment to increase the intake of nursing students in the next five years to help build an effective health system.

The department aims to recruit a total of 2 660 new nursing students to start training in 2012.

In the next five years, the department aims to increase the intake by 25 per cent per year.

Skills and education promoted by accord

Job creation remains one of government's top priorities. The New Growth Path is designed to create five million jobs in the next decade. Skills development and education are key factors in achieving this goal.

Work opportunities beckon for 30 000 new artisan learners this year thanks to the signing of the National Skills Accords in July. The accords are a partnership between government, labour and business.
