As South Africa observes National Disability Rights Awareness Month from 3 November to 3 December, aspiring and established entrepreneurs with disabilities are being encouraged to take advantage of the Amavulandlela Funding Scheme, offered by the Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA).
The Amavulandlela Funding Scheme is an initiative of SEDFA, an agency of the Department of Small Business Development. The scheme was created to help persons with disabilities overcome barriers to accessing finance and participate meaningfully in the economy by starting, growing and expanding businesses. It offers funding ranging between R50 000 and R15 million.
How to apply
The first step is to develop a clear business plan or proposal that demonstrates the viability of the business idea or expansion plans.
Applicants must then complete a SEDFA funding application form and submit it together with the required supporting documents. Applications can be submitted at a SEDFA access point or emailed to the agency for consideration.
To qualify for funding, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- The business must be at least 50% plus one share owned by a person with a verified disability.
- The owner must be actively involved in the day-to-day running of the business.
- Eligible entities include small and medium-sized enterprises, close corporations, companies and co-operatives.
- The business must demonstrate economic merit, meaning it is financially sustainable and technically feasible.
For entrepreneurs with disabilities looking to take the next step in their business journey, the Amavulandlela Funding Scheme could provide the financial boost needed to unlock growth and create opportunities.
