Audiences can 
look forward to a magical festive-season experience when Tchaikovsky's beloved ballet, The Nutcracker, takes to the Roodepoort Theatre stage on 5 and 6 December.
The production is part of a new partnership between Youth Russian Ballet Company (YRBC) and the Roodepoort Theatre, combining the company's dancers and production with the venue's stage and audience reach.
The ballet follows the Nutcracker Prince’s battle against the Mouse King before taking audiences to the Land of Sweets. The production features well-known musical numbers, including the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Waltz of the Flowers.
“The Nutcracker is a beloved festive-season tradition for families, and this production offers ballet lovers, families and audiences of all ages the opportunity to experience a full-scale classical production,” said the Roodepoort Theatre in a media statement.
The production also continues the theatre’s association with Yana Auger, Director of the Russian School of Ballet and founder of YRBC. Auger was inducted as a Star Recipient on the Stars of Roodepoort Walk of Fame, unveiled during the theatre's 45th anniversary celebration on Heritage Day, 24 September 2025. The recognition honoured her contribution to ballet in Johannesburg.
Born in Russia, Auger trained in the Vaganova method and has taught ballet in Johannesburg since 2008. She holds a teaching qualification from the Bolshoi Ballet Academy and has more than 25 years of teaching experience.
The partnership supports emerging talent, gives dancers a platform to showcase their skills and brings classical ballet to local audiences, while connecting communities through the arts.
