If you or a loved one
are living with a disability, or are pregnant and would like to receive a home visit to cast your vote, the Electoral Commission (IEC) has systems in place to ensure your voice is heard. This is what you should do to apply for a special vote and participate in the upcoming elections.
Do you qualify?
Before starting your application, ensure you meet the basic requirements. You can apply if:
- You are a registered voter.
- You have a valid South African identity document (green barcoded ID book, smartcard ID, or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate).
Not sure if you’re registered?
To check your status and find your specific voting station, you can visit elections.org.za, SMS your ID number to 32810, or call the IEC contact centre at 0800 11 8000.
Types of Special Votes
By law, there are two main reasons you may apply for a special vote:
- Home Visits: If you cannot travel to your voting station because you are physically infirm, disabled, or pregnant.
- Voting Station Visits: If you are unable to cast your vote at your station on the official election day, you can apply to vote there on a predetermined earlier date.
How to Apply
- Online: Use the secured online application form at registertovote.elections.org.za.
- SMS: Send your identity number to 32249 (Please note: this is for voting station visits ONLY and costs R1.00 per SMS).
- In-Person: Visit your local IEC office (not national or provincial offices) and hand-deliver an MEC 35 form. While forms must be hand-delivered, someone else may drop it off on your behalf.
What Happens Next?
Once your application has been processed, you will receive an SMS notification regarding the outcome. You can also monitor the status of your application via the IEC website.
Remember, casting a special vote ensures that every citizen, regardless of their physical circumstances or schedule, can exercise their democratic right.
